Two weeks later, April’s steps slowed as she left work in no hurry to return to her suite. Nneka wouldn’t be home. She had made good on her intention to go to the mountain retreat center forty-plus miles away to pray. Already lonely, April got on the commuter shuttle bus home from the CYES camp and relaxed against the shiny cheap-leather seat.

As she slid on her earbuds to listen to some music during the forty-five-minute ride, she began thinking through the events of the past two weeks. She’d been so busy that she hadn’t had enough time to ruminate over what working with Kiel had been like.

To her surprise, her emotions aside, things had gone well so far, better than she’d thought it would. Actually, she had begun contemplating, on the first day during the meeting, about leaving the project if Kiel had insisted on shutting down the chapel. It was that important. Knowing the risk believers took in worshiping Christ in these parts, she had to stand up for them, especially for those without a voice. Had she not intervened, the chapel would’ve been cut off the agenda.

A thought occurred to her then, one she couldn’t shake. If Kiel was not the country director, a man who knew her before and respected her opinion, would the chapel have stayed? Or would it have been discarded with someone else in that position? Was this fulfilling the point Nneka made about the possibility that God placed her and Kiel here for a purpose? Was it God who sent Kiel here to save something important to her—and to Him? But again, at a personal level, was Kiel here to save more than the chapel? Did God send Kiel here—for her?

April swallowed at the thought and inched the volume on her speakers higher. No, it couldn’t be. Not with the pain he’d caused her. She hadn’t even told her sisters about Kiel’s presence where she was. Doing so would mean she’d have to tell them where exactly she was and risk having them jump on a plane to here.

Of course, from their latest text messages, she knew Stella couldn’t leave the US since she was heavily pregnant with the second child—and last child according to Stella—for her and Michael. This was in addition to the gorgeous kids they had before meeting each other and getting married, with Stella being a widow and Michael adopting his siblings. Excited for her sister, April could hardly wait for the good news of her delivery.

She glanced out the window as the landscape changed from town structures and concrete buildings, to some mud houses and fewer concrete homes whose bases were browned with dust and splashes of red mud from dusty desert windstorms that blew through occasionally. Colorful roofing gave way to rusted metal roofs as they neared the poorer community around where they stayed.

Granted, The Residence—the place where expatriates resided—was well built and had running water and constant electricity. But the areas around them were reflective of the need they came to meet.
